Strophanthus preussii (commonly called Preuss’ strophanthus, spider tresses, poison arrow vine, tassel vine, corkscrew flower) is a woody vine or shrub in the dogbane family Apocynaceae. It’s known for its unusual, long-tailed flowers and has traditional uses.

Description

  • It grows as an evergreen liana (climbing vine) up to about 12 m (≈39 ft) long or as a shrub up to ~5 m (≈16 ft)tall.

  • The flowers are fragrant, often with a white to orange base and red stripes or spots inside, and each petal has very long ribbon-like tails that can be around 30 cm (≈12 in) long. This gives some flowers a “medusa” or spider look.
  • Leaves are opposite, simple, and glossy green. The plant produces milky sap if cut.
